Did you know June is National Scoliosis Awareness Month? Scoliosis effects two to three percent of the United State’s population which is an estimated 7 million Americans! This month has the goal of increasing public education, awareness and early detection of scoliosis.
Scoliosis describes an abnormal lateral, or sideways, curvature of the spine. In addition to having a “C” or an “S” shaped spine, this condition can have painful symptoms including protruding ribs, uneven hips and shoulders, trouble standing up straight and walking, and muscle spasms. For many individuals with scoliosis, the abnormal curve is mild enough that it doesn’t impact appearance or health but patients still might develop back pain because of their curve. If scoliosis is left untreated, the spinal curvature could worsen and this could even put pressure on other systems of the body. This is why screening and early detection are so important.
Chiropractors are able to identify scoliosis and and treat the painful symptoms of the condition. Chiropractic care is a great noninvasive way to improve scoliosis pain without side effects. If you are suffering with scoliosis, or believe you could be, seeing a chiropractor can be what you need to get the relief and support you are looking for.
